Helen Smida Oreski, 96, of Carroll Township, died Saturday afternoon, August 26, 2017 at the Hallsworth House in Monessen.
She was born May 6, 1921 in Czechoslovakia, a daughter of late John and Anna Ondash Smida.
Formerly of Van Voorhis, Mrs. Oreski resided with her daughter, Marlene.
She attended the former St. Clement School in Ellsworth and Bentleyville High School.
She was a member of Saint Katharine Drexel Parish (formerly Ave Maria) and the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, Branch 88.
Mrs. Oreski was an honorary member of the former Ave Maria Parish Women’s Guild and was one of the original “Pierogi Ladies” at Ave Maria.
She was a member of the former St. Clement’s Rosary Society and served as a Democratic committee woman for Washington County from 1952 to 2006.
On September 14, 1946, she married John Joseph Oreski, who died September 11, 1998. The couple had owned and operated the Amoco Service Station in Van Voorhis until 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Marlene Oreski and Elaine Kevech (the late Andrew S. Kevech), both of Carroll Township; two grandchildren, Amber and Philip Kevech; a brother John Smida (Dorothy) of Finleyville; a sister, Dorothy Hands (James) of Monongahela and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a brother, Michael “Mike” Smida, Sr. and a sister, Anna Satina.
Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 30, 2017 followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Katharine Drexel, Bentleyville Campus (formerly Ave Maria), 126 Church Street, Bentleyville with the Reverend Edward L. Yuhas, Administrator, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. The Rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the owners and the entire staff at the Hallsworth House in Monessen for the loving and compassionate care they gave Helen during her stay there, as well as the OSPTA Hospice group.
