Charles Hrutkay Obituary

Charles H. “Ty” Hrutkay, 86, of Coal Center, died Friday, March 2, 2012 at his home.

He was born August 25, 1925 in Cokeburg, a son of Ferdinand and Grace Groskoff Hrutkay, and was one of nine children.

Mr. Hrutkay was a graduate of the Bentleyville School District, and was well-known and accomplished football and baseball athlete. For 36 years he taught school at Bentworth and was a head baseball and football coach.

He was a University of Pittsburgh football recruit, who played at Pitt as a freshman.

In 1946, Mr. Hrutkay went on to star at Waynesburg College from 1947 to 1951 and scored a school record of 16 touchdowns in 1949.

He was a Democratic committeeman for more than 30 years.

Mr. Hrutkay was a life-long member of the Ave Maria Parish and the Knights of Columbus, Council 5826, both in Bentleyville.

His true passion was working the family farm and he was an active 4-H leader for more than 25 years.

A veteran, he served with U.S. Army during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient. His organization, the 1256 Engineering Combat Company, engineered and built key bridges for the allies leading up to the Battle of the Bulge.

He married Patricia Conklin from Waynesburg, who survives.

Also surviving are three children, Douglas Hrutkay, Mark Hrutkay (Janey) and Kim Hrutkay Kreisler (Curt); seven grandchildren, Ashley Wright, Kasi Taylor, Aaron Hrutkay, Olivia Hrutkay, Rachel Hrutkay, Zachary Kreisler and Max Kreisler; two great-grandchildren, Mason Wright and Brielle Taylor; five siblings, Margaret Redmerski of Peters Township, Irene Thames (the late John) of Northville, Mich., John Hrutkay (the late Martha) and Charles “Gus” Hrutkay (Laura) all of Somerset Township and Edward Hrutkay (Betty) of Daisytown; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are three brothers, Joseph, Frank and Steve Hrutkay.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Monday, March 5, 2012 followed at 10 a.m. by Mass of Christian Burial at Ave Maria Parish, Bentleyville, with the Rev. Edward Yuhas, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela. The Knights of Columbus will pray the rosary at 6 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
