George "Gus" Hrutkay, 96, of Upper St. Clair, formerly of Bentleyville, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at Sunrise of Upper St. Clair.
He was born November 1, 1928 in Bentleyville, son of Ferdinand and Grace Groskoff Hrutkay.
A graduate of Bentleyville High School, Gus attended the West Penn Technical School.
He was an electrical designer draftsman for Bethlehem Steel and several other engineering companies in the Pittsburgh area.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served as a private first class with two years active service including 18 months in Germany.
He was a member of Saint Katharine Drexel Parish, the parish choir, the Resurrection choir, and the Knights of Columbus Council 5826 in Bentleyville.
He enjoyed gardening, caring for his lawn, cutting and splitting logs, family gatherings, and enjoyed playing blackjack at the Meadows Casino.
On June 20, 1953 at St. Luke Church, Bentleyville, he married Laura Benedetti, who passed away January 6, 2025.
Surviving are his children, Greg Hrutkay (Brenda), Jeff Hrutkay (Veronica), Lori Clairmont and Heather Stubert (Tim); five grandchildren, Matthew (Katarina), Kelley, Kyle (Sevan), Corey (Maria) Hrutkay, and Dylan Clairmont; and seven great-grandchildren, Lucas, Lyvia, Mila, Kai, Cal, and Max Hrutkay, and Wagner Clairmont Thompson.
Gus was the last of his immediate family.
Deceased are six brothers, Joseph, Frank, Steve, Edward, Charles, John Hrutkay, two sisters, Margaret Redmerski, Irene Thames, and grandson Ryan Clairmont.
Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a prayer service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, March 10, 2025 followed at 10:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Katharine Drexel, 126 Church Street, Bentleyville, with the Reverend Edward L. Yuhas, as celebrant.
A procession will follow to Sacred Heart Cemetery for the Rite of Committal service and military honors by the American Legion Post 165, Bentleyville and the U.S. Army.
The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 5 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.
