John Kerns Obituary

John R. Kerns, 84, of Ellsworth, died Friday, October 14, 2011 in his home.

He was born February 19, 1927 in Monongahela, a son of Bernard Boyd and Mary Koshar Kerns.

Mr. Kerns retired from Bethlehem Mines and worked at mine 51 in Ellsworth and mine 60 in Somerset Township.

A veteran of World War II, he served from May 1945 to October 1946 with the U.S. Army as a Private First Class.

He was a member of American Legion Post 165 and the Independent Club, both of Bentleyville.

His wife, Rosemond Yannacci Kerns, survives. They were married February 3, 1951.

Also surviving are three children, Connie Caster of Mount Clemens, Mich., Barry Kerns (Debra) of Ontario and Diane Teagarden (Charles) of Ellsworth; nine grandchildren, Tom, Chad, Clint and Michael Shumar, Brian and Tim Caster, Brandon Teagarden, Amanda Rossi and Joshua Kerns; 5 great-grandchildren, Laura Beth Bussey, Gabriell and Dominic Caster, Mackenzie Shumar and Aubrey Rossi; a brother, Felix Kerns of Bentleyville; three sisters, Margaret Vinansky and Bridget Kerns, both of Ontario and Sarah Billups of Ellsworth and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a daughter, Sharon Shumar; two brothers, Bernard and Charles Kerns and two sisters, Mary Capozza, Cecilia Blackburn.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a blessing service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, October 17, 2011 with the Rev. Gary W. Krummert of Ave Maria Parish, officiating. Interment will follow in Beallsville Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post 165.
