John Maczuzak Obituary

John Anthony Maczuzak, 72, died suddenly on Friday, December 27, following a brief illness. He most recently resided in Freedom, PA.

John was born in Ellsworth, PA, to Peter and Catherine Maczuzak. An avid athlete, John was awarded a football scholarship in 1959 to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where he also played basketball. He was a member of Pitt’s 1963 famed “No Bowl” football team before being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs the following year. After one season, John returned to finish his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Pitt, after which he joined the National Works of U.S. Steel in McKeesport, PA.

During his 31 years with USS, John held several management positions, including General Manager of USS Fairless Works (Fairless Hills, PA) and vice president of operations of USS/Kobe (Lorain, OH). He left U.S. Steel in 1996 and soon thereafter was appointed president and COO of National Steel Corp. at its Mishawaka, IN, headquarters. He stayed at National Steel until its acquisition by U.S. Steel in 2003, after which he retired to western Pennsylvania.

John was preceded in death in 2006 by his wife of 42 years, Janet Hamilton Maczuzak. He is survived by his daughter Amy, of Pittsburgh; his son John David, daughter-in-law Cindy, and granddaughter Kathryn, of North Huntingdon; and his son Vern, of New York City. Other survivors include his companion, Rose Marie Wintermantel, three brothers, four sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
