Chiara Malta Cordisco (formerly Cicone) of Bentleyville passed away peacefully Sunday evening, January 5, 2025. She was 96.
She was born in Pietransieri, Italy, a mountainous village in the province of L'Aquila, and spent most of her childhood there until WWII.
Her life was forever changed by the devastating war events that took place in her village.
In 1949, she traveled to the U.S. with her mother, Concetta Cicone, and brother, Flavio Cicone. Her father, Nicole Cicone, and a friend from the same village, Albert Cordisco, met them at the train station in Pittsburgh.
In 1950, Chiara and Albert were married and have two daughters, Frosina Cordisco (Robert Malenfant) and Rita Cordisco. She has two grandchildren, Chris Damich (Lindsay) of Virginia and Nicola Brennan (Dan Brennan) and three great-grandchildren, Casey Damich, Emmett, and Elise Brennan. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins in the US and Italy.
She was preceded in death by siblings, Lia Frabotta of Italy and Flavio Cicone of Michigan.
Friends are welcome from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2025, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Katharine Drexel, 126 Church Street, Bentleyville, with the Reverend Edward L. Yuhas, as celebrant.
A procession will follow to Sacred Heart Cemetery for the Rite of Committal service.
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas will pray the Rosary at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home.
