Nellie A. Chupasko Prokell, 91, Haymarket, Virginia, formerly of Daisytown (Clover Hill), died Friday, January 14, 2010 at the home of her daughter in Haymarket.
She was born March 10, 1919 in Charleroi, a daughter of Nicholas Chupasko and Helen Stetz Chupasko.
She attended the Charleroi Schools.
A homemaker, Mrs. Prokell was Russian Orthodox by faith.
She was a member of Women of the Moose in Vienna, Virginia, the Red Hat Society (Cherry Blossom Chatterboxes) in Fairfax County, Virginia.
As a young woman, Nellie worked as a crystal inspector for Corning Glass Works in Charleroi. During World War II, she inspected glass liners that Corning made for artillery shells and received awards for her war effort.
In her youth, she was an accomplished equestrian, and loved dancing to the Big Bands (Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and others). She won a beauty contest over several hundred girls and also won a contest for the most beautiful hands.
Surviving are two daughters, Marie Helena Batchelor of Alexandria, Virg. and Cynthia Lynn Glade, Haymarket, Virg.; two grandchildren, David Daniel Prokell of Chandler, Arizona and Heather Huynh and her husband Robert of Haymarket, Virg.; a great-granddaughter, Madison Lynn Huynh of Haymarket, Virg.; a sister, Martha Bertovich of Pittsburgh and four nieces and six nephews who all reside in Pennsylvania.
Deceased are husband, Stanley George Prokell; a son, Stanley Nicholas Prokell; a step-son, Ronald Prokell; four sisters, Mary Carroll, Eva Carson, Ann Dick and Olga Chupasko; a brother, Nicholas Chupasko and two sets of twins who died very young.
Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, January 21 with Rev.
