Patsy Scicchitano, 86, of Bentleyville, died peacefully Wednesday evening, September 5, 2012 in The Donnell House, Washington.
He was born March 25, 1926 in Bentleyville, a son of Domeneco and Maria Mirarchi Scicchitano.
He graduated from Bentleyville High School Class of 1944, where he was an avid football, basketball, and baseball player.
During WWII, he served in the Army 95th Infantry âThe Iron Men of Metzâ and with the U. S. Air Force at the base in Greenville, South Carolina during the Korean Conflict. While in the service he played on a basketball team with professional players.
Upon his return home, he played basketball for Corning Big Five, Charleroi Macâs Club (greater Pittsburgh League), Bentleyville Bullets, New Italian Hall in Monessen. He also played semi-pro football with the Monessen Ravens.
Patsy and Frank Smith were partners in Smith and Scicchitano Contracting, building and remolding many homes throughout the area.
In 1964, he built the Tan-O-Bell bowling lanes. He and his wife Buckie operated the business until 1984. During this time he bowled a sanctioned â300â game.
Patsy was a member of the Ave Maria Parish in Bentleyville. Prior to his illness, he was a member of the parish choir.
He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 5826 and was the recipient of the first Knights of Columbus âFamily of the Yearâ award in 1977.
He was also a member of the American Legion, Eagles, Independent Club and former V. F. W.
He enjoyed gardening and shared his plants and produce with his many friends and family.
On December 31, 1947, at St. Luke Church, he married Leona âBuckieâ Boccabello, his wife of more than 64 years.
Surviving in addition to his beloved wife, are two children, Jerry and his wife Margo of Newport News, Virg. and Patsy (Pat) Polachek and husband George of Bentleyville; dear grandfather of Jeremy and wife Beth of Hampton, Virg. and George Pasquale Polachek of Bentleyville; great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Elizabeth of Virginia; a sister, Josephine Sommariva of Georgia and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are five brothers, Bruno, Ralph, Sinso, Sam and infant Joseph Scicchitano; a sister, Theresa Codispot and a dearly beloved sister-in-law Josie Stefan.
At the deceasedâs request, there will be no visitation or viewing. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Ave Maria Parish, 126 Church Street, Bentleyville with the Rev. Edward L. Yuhas, as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Luke Cemetery, Bentleyville with graveside military rites by American Legion Post 165. The Knights of Columbus will pray the rosary at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
