Reverend Donald Chortos, a priest for 58 years, passed away Friday evening, December 13, 2024, at St. Clair Hospital at the age of 84.
He was born January 27, 1940 in Large, a son of George Chortos, Sr., and Lillian Dobrich Chortos.
He attended school in Clairton, St. Fidelis High School in Herman; and in Washington, D.C. he earned degrees at The Catholic University and Capuchin College. He attended St. Fidelis Seminary and on October 22, 1966, was ordained a Capuchin Priest and served with that order at St. Agatha in Ellwood City until 1983.
On November 29, 1983 he was incardinated into the Diocese of Pittsburgh, where he served several parishes, including: St. Agatha, Ellwood City; St. Louis, West Sunbury; Divine Mercy, Beaver Falls; Holy Martyrs, Tarentum; St. Bartholomew, Pittsburgh; St. Barbara, Bridgeville; Immaculate Conception, Washington; St. Patrick, Canonsburg; and St. Katharine Drexel, Bentleyville and Richeyville.
He enjoyed golfing and fishing.
Surviving are his siblings, Reverend George Chortos and Marcella Fazio (Ron); nieces Rhonda and Kristin; nephew Ron; several great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7:30 pm, Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Saint Katharine Drexel Parish, Bentleyville Main Church, 126 Church Street, Bentleyville, and a Vigil Service will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Additional visitation will be from 8 to 9:45 a.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at the Immaculate Conception Church of Saint James Parish, 119 West Chestnut Street, Washington, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial with The Most Reverend David A. Zubik, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, as celebrant.
Interment will be in Saint Anthony Cemetery, Harrisville in Butler County.
