Sylvester “Lou” Tyler Sr., 75, of Bentleyville, passed away Monday, June 20, 2011 in UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, surrounded by his wife and children.
He was born June 11, 1936 in Daisytown, a son of the late Ernest and Esther Jones Tyler.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Karen Jones Tyler; four sons, Carmen (Ann) Tyler, of Daisytown, Sylvester (Gabby) Tyler Jr., Charles Nathan Tyler and Wendell Tyler, all of Temecula, California and daughter, Sylvia Blakey of Hampton, Virginia; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, John Tyler Sr. and Willie (Diane) Tyler Sr., all of Daisytown and Mack Arthur Tyler of Washington; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred Williams of Pasadena, California, Mrs. Ruth Miller of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Charlie Mae Bass and Mrs. Marsha (Anthony) Green, all of Harrisburg; a host of nieces, nephews and friends and a very special friend, Dr. Alvaro Changco.
Deceased are two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Jackson and Mrs. Ernestine Robertson; two brothers, Edward Tyler and Ulysses Tyler Sr. and a grandson, Daywan Sylvester Tyler.
Mr. Tyler loved his wife Karen unconditionally, who was also his best friend. He also loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Daisytown and a graduate of CaliforniaHigh School.
A veteran, Mr. Tyler served on the USS Ranger in the United States Navy from 1955-1959.
He was a member in his family's band, Harold and the Flames.
He worked at U.S. Steel Homestead works, J&L Steel Mills, McGraw Edison, Adam Idemiller Construction. He was later a coal miner with Bethlehem Mines and worked at mine 60 and then at Livingston portal. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. Local 1197, Cokeburg
Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home, Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville, 724-239-2255. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 28 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Daisytown with Rev. Robert Bailey, Jr. officiating. Those attending the service are to meet at the church. Interment will follow in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Donora. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
